You may have heard the news about the assassination of two of our county prosecutors here in Kaufman County, Texas within about a two month span. The news media all over the U.S. have picked up the story. Most recently, last Saturday, the bodies of the Kaufman County District Attorney and his wife were found shot in their home. So shocking, so sad, so scary for the criminal justice law enforcement officials every where.
So, where does the sewing come in? The wife of the DA was a quilter. Several members of my ASG group are also members of the Quilt Guild. Many of my friends are mourning the untimely death of their friend and fellow quilter, Cynthia.
I attended my monthly ASG meeting today. I learned that Cynthia had just begun teaching a class at our local quilt shop. The class was going to last several weeks as the pattern was considered a more difficult pattern. Two of my guild friends were a part of her class. Today, they remembered the fun times they had shared with her at their various quilting retreats; they remembered how upbeat she always was; they remembered how much she loved her husband reminding them, "I have the BEST husband in the whole world." They both noted that she didn't have to say how much she loved him as they could see it in her face and hear it in her voice. I learned today that she will be cremated and placed beside her husband in his casket so they can be buried together.
I didn't know them personally. I knew him by face when I occasionally passed him on the square near the County Courthouse. He was so determined to bring to justice those that shot and killed the prosecutor that worked for him as he walked from his car to the Courthouse on the morning of January 31 of this year. Then, just two months later, he was a victim himself.
The whole county is in shock, disbelief, and so many other adjectives that don't even come to mind at the moment. There is little doubt in anyone's mind that that both of these were professional hits, carefully planned, carefully crafted.
I hope and pray that these murderers will be found, and justice will be served.
This is so horrible. I'm so sorry this happened to the family and your community. Truly awful.
ReplyDeleteWow. Thank you for sharing and putting such a personal perspective on this tragedy.
ReplyDeleteI have been following this, and I agree with what you said about all aspects of the case being truly scary.
ReplyDeleteThe network "news" drivels on about reality shows and celebrities instead of employing real journalists to report about how rampant organized crime gangs, the Mexican cartels and their dirty drug operations are growing all over this country, even operating out of prisons. The cartels are thriving in suburban Atlanta GA, operating out of warehouses in Duluth GA where the Sewing Expo is held every year. Lots of crime, murders and assosicated violence right there.
The fish rots from the head down
Such a pointless tragedy. It's nice to hear a bit about the victim and especially to be reminded of her in a positive way.
ReplyDeleteI've read/heard this story also. Sad. Just very sad. Life is so short, even when we live to "ripe old age", much less cut short by hatred.
ReplyDeleteLinda, this whole situation makes me so sad. I lived in Kaufman in the 1980s.
