I've found that the shorts with the side seam pockets make me nervous. The phone just doesn't feel secure to me in that side seam pocket. It might drop out and I'd never know it!
So, Simplicity 2224 to the rescue.

The short has 5 pattern pieces: front, side front, back, side back, and pocket. One side of the pocket is sewn into the front and side front seam making it very secure. I then top stitched that seam from waist to hem.
| Front |
You can see the pocket better here and you will notice that it wraps around to the side back section of the short. Plenty of room for my phone, and I'm not worried about it accidentally falling out.
The striped version below is my muslin. I cut a straight size 14 with the muslin. It was a bit tight at the hip.
Back fit pretty well. Just scooped the back crotch seam, and it felt better (revised seam not sewn on the following photo).
The final version is a light weight denim that was in the stash. I have no clue where it came from or how long I've had it. I had just enough for the shorts. The waist band is a sew on band that calls for a drawstring. I much prefer elastic to a drawstring. The waistband piece is a bit narrow for elastic, but I managed to make it work in this version. Next time I will make the cut on band wider so that I can easily use 1" or 1.25" elastic in the casing.
After the stripe muslin the changes for the denim pair were: scoop the crotch about .5" at the curve, take 3/8 seams on all seams except the crotch seam, and I cut the length 1" longer. I will use these same changes for the next pair and will add one more - cutting the waistband wider.
I like this pattern, and it's just what I needed for the purpose in mind. Now I need to peruse the stash for fabric for another pair.
Great shorts! I feel.the same way about pockets and cell phones. Have found the pants pocket of the MSS to be secure.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Bev. Need to go re-look at that pattern. Naturally, it is in the stash.
DeleteNice shorts and pockets. Sorry your pet is under the weather.
ReplyDeleteThese are cute! In addition to being practical, the pockets are just so cute!
ReplyDeleteI love these shorts and find your photo techniques entertaining :-)
ReplyDeleteLinda, I'm sorry that one of your fur children isn't doing well. I'm really interested in the pockets and construction of these shorts -- I listen to podcasts on my phone when I'm gardening (weeding) and out walking. I cannot tell you how many times the fabric (pocket front or back) "touches" the phone and changes it to the next (or previous) podcast. Maybe a pocket in a slightly different configuration, like you have in these shorts, would work for me. Hope your little guy/gal is comfortable.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the good thoughts on Freckles. She's holding her own right now. Still waiting on some test results that hopefully will be in before the end of this week. Hope you find your pocket solution!
DeleteI have been "wearing" my phone a little more these days too. Just a thought, you might want to sew on a piece of velcro in the pocket for insurance. I was out and not paying attention when my phone slipped out of my pocket. I've now gone over board and I wear something with a zippered pocket. I really like the way the pocket is sewn on this pattern.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, Rhonda. I just may add some after they come out of the wash. Zipper, hmm.....may go to that with the next pair........
DeleteI do like that pocket! I keep my cell phone in my back pocket a lot. I don't recommend it, though. It fell in to the toilet one day while I was in the bathroom. Not good!
ReplyDeleteGreat looking shorts. I can see the need for a closure too. I lost my phone not long ago when it was in a pocket that was too shallow to be safe.
