I find it amusing that so many bloggers that I follow are talking about the summer ending and their plans for fall sewing. Please don't misunderstand, I am not criticizing and making fun of those bloggers. It's just that in my part of the world, we will be dealing with summer temps possibly into November (or later).
Back in the "old days" when I attended public school, the first day of school was always the day after Labor Day (September). None of the public schools at that time had air conditioning. We were doomed to sweat and stick to our desk seats for at least a month. By October, we often had cool mornings with the afternoons getting into the 80's or low 90's. I HATED that first month of school. I HATED sweating. I HATED sticking to my desk and the lunch room chairs. and I HATED being HOT. Open windows and fans only blew HOT air.
This year, we have been blessed with a rather mild summer. The temps have been running high 90's low 100's. So far, no sustained 110 degree days like last year. BUT we still have to get through the rest of August and September.
So, I won't be thinking of fall sewing for a while yet. AND, fall sewing will likely just mean sewing with darker colors of cottons, rayons and blends.
Regarding my sick pup that helped prompt the previous post "Phone Shorts," I'm happy to report that Miss Freckles is on the mend. After LOTS of tests at the Vet Specialist, and ruling out several things, she tested positive for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme Disease. Both are tick borne. AND yes, she faithfully gets her flea/tick meds, but sometimes things just happen. She will be on antibiotics for 4 to 6 weeks, but she is feeling more like her old self every day. I am thankful for that.
I've been sewing PJs for the children's shelter. That easy sewing has helped me keep my sanity during this uneasy period with Freckles. I'm thankful for that, too.
My weather is much the same. I won't even consider handling those heavier fabrics until mid Sept. Winter will get here soon enough. Why rush?
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy that Miss Freckles is on the mend. As for seasonal sewing, I live in western NY (near Niagara Falls and Buffalo), so I *should* be thinking about fall sewing, if not actually doing it. But I just don't sew ahead. Which is kind of funny because I love to work ahead in almost all areas of my life. Oh and I hear ya about sticking to stuff, blech!
ReplyDeleteHaha! That's me, thinking about fall sewing already. Partly because I have NO idea what weather does on this side of the world. Well I know in theory, but that's never the same as living though the seasons in person. People keep saying it has been a mild summer...I also feel like my family has enough summer clothes at this point, which makes me think of what they need for winter...that way I can keep sewing!
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean about summer temps well into fall. I guess I'm feeling fallish be school started for me on July 31st. Back to school just equates fall to me. Glad your puppy is feeling better.
ReplyDeleteNow that is hot weather. Glad the pup is getting better.
ReplyDeleteOh, poor Freckles. So glad you were able to get help for all those ailments. Such a pretty pup. As to weather and fall...I'm with you! And I remember those awful first weeks at school as well. The heat, the smells! having to wear a skirt all day. Yuck! And here in deep south Florida, fall sewing is a myth anyway, more a change of attitude than change of weather :-) But welcome nonetheless. As in Texas, won't be here for ages...
ReplyDeleteGood to hear Ms. Freckes is doing better. I know they are our fur babies have a big place in our hearts.
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow Texan I agree with you 100% about weather and waiting for fall sewing. With the heat and humidity...summer is not over until early Oct if we are lucky!
Yay that Freckles is on the mend!
ReplyDeleteIt has been a mild summer here too in NJ. I can't believe I'm about to write this, but I sort of miss the heat.
I'm going to enjoy every last drop of summer. The weather here (southern England) is showery but still warm enough not to need a jumper hopefully for another four or so weeks. Fingers crossed anyway.
ReplyDeleteI spent 23 years in So. FL and I know what you mean! Now that I'm back in NJ, I really appreciate the change of seasons, although this summer was so perfect I hate to see it go!
