Sunday morning, a young man rang our bell and offered his car insurance card advising us that he had just run over our mailbox. Hmm. Actually he missed the pipe fence (thank you very much) and his truck was missing a wheel as it sat on top of the brick enclosed mailbox. He said he was OK, and the wrecker was on its way.
An estimate today to haul off the casualty and build a new one is $750. Thankfully, he was prompt in informing his insurance company, and they were expecting DH's call today. It's so wet here from our record 13" snowfall that right now a temporary box cannot even be put in--ground is much too soggy. So, I'll talk to the Postmaster tomorrow to see how we will will be getting mail in the interim.
Thankfully, no one was hurt--we just have come inconvenience for a while.
Wow--he obviously lost control of his vehicle. What happened to your snow?

In our locale we had some highway 4 laned and they have changed the mail box locations and regulations so much at one point dh moved it several times and had to change the box support to one on the list. Now they won't allow the bricks or farm implement posts or any posts that will cause injury to someone who hits them. I guess it is ok if someone runs over you getting your mail from the box as long as it the structure doesn't hurt them. You might want to check to see if there are any new guidelines for your area regarding the brick supports. It would be a shame to do such a nice one if "they" tell you after the fact to change it like they did here. mssewcrazy
ReplyDeleteI guess he had no choice but to fess up since he damaged his vehicle. Here the mail box crashers just hit them and leave them without your knowing they were responsible. Glad you "caught" your crasher. mssewcrazy
