Lana's Jean - Take 3

Well,  after taking the scissors to Take 2, things didn't go well.  I slashed at the wrong place, too low, and it went downhill from there.  What to do?  Start again.  So this past weekend, I managed to get some time in the sewing room and recut the pattern from Take 2 (before the slashing began).  Except - I felt the legs were a bit too loose, so, I cut a size 12 to the hip line and then a size 10 from that point to the hem.

With Take 2, it dawned on me, "I think I need additional length in the back crotch.  I had always thought I had a flat bum (which I do), but it may be from "sag" - thus still needing extra length to cover the extra length of the sag.  (Does that make sense?) When I slashed and spread that area, it seemed to help and let things relax a bit.  I still needed that tuck (dart) under the bum where the largest point begins in the inseam and tapers to nothing at the side seam.

After a couple of "hit or misses" here's what I got:  The wrinkle at the inside knee?  I think it may go away when the actual alterations are sewn - if not, I'll tackle that.  (sorry the camera was sitting crooked - I'm not really leaning left)

side view:

now cups a little under the bum.....trousers need to hang straight, jeans get to cup a little or alot - depending on preference.

I sent the first photo to Peggy asking or advice/suggestions.  She said she thought they looked good.  We'll see after the next pair.

So, what happened next?  I went through a couple of stash bins and pulled out some embroidered denim that  one of my my sewing buddies had given me.  It was left over from one of her projects.  I cut and sewed another "quick and dirty." (knowing it had some lycra).  When I finished sewing and tried them on, they were TOO.BIG!  MUCH.TOO.BIG.  No way I could evaluate anything from them.  That was an exercise in futility.

Next on the agenda is to order some non-lycra denim.  I don't know when I'll be able to get back to J's or H's so an online order will likely be necessary.  Thus, the jeans project will go on the back burner for a while, until the denim arrives.

In the meantime, I have carefully folded the muslin fabric "pattern" and placed it with the pattern envelope.  I  will pick up the sewing room as it looks as though a tornado blew through!  I may be able to sew the TAM 10 before the the jeans project can resume.  Now back to cleaning.

  1. Wow Linda. You certainly are persistant. It's one muslin for me if that. I find jeans confusing to fit because you never see anyone on the street wear jeans that don't have all kinds of wrinkles, smiles and frowns.Lol.

  2. At least you have a better fitting pattern. That would make me feel more confident with the next pair of jeans.
It's great that you've put the effort to make these jeans fit you well.

  3. You pin out the fullness just as Peggy demonstrates. Do you know that her next webcast, in 2 weeks, is "fitting yourself by yourself"? I have that DVD and it is very informative.
