I Won!

Karen, blogger at Sewing by the Seat of My Pants, had a give-away a couple of weeks ago.  I was lucky enough to win this fun book!  Thanks again, Karen.

The book arrived last week.  I haven't had time yet to go through it thoroughly, but my initial 'thumb through' took me back to the 8th grade at John B. Hood Jr. High School - specifically, my Home Ec class.  The sewing supplies listed and many of the illustrations took me back to that classroom.  You know, I do not remember my teacher's name.  That's unusual for me, especially for a class that I enjoyed.  We made an A-line skirt in that class.  Mine was a red twill.  Check out the color of the skirt on the book cover!

Let's see, I would have been about 14 in the 8th grade.  Back (in the dark ages) when I went to school, my elementary school took me thru the 7th grade and Jr. High was 8th and 9th grades.  Sewing a skirt was a bit elementary for me at that time since I had been sewing for about three years already.  It goes without saying that the class came easy for me.  Fortunately, I was able to help out some of my classmates who had never opened a pattern envelope before, let alone cut out a piece of fabric.  I was so at home in that class.

I went on to take another year of Home Ec in the 9th grade.  I still remember the blue dress I made.  It was typical mid to late 60's style, the shift dress.  I remember it had a tab down the front with buttons.  This tab was purely decoration.  Oh, and I covered the buttons.  I remember that I'd really be on a roll when time would be up.  Sewing for less than an hour (I think class time was 50 minutes, and we had to allow time to clean up and put our things away.) was just not enough for me!

Fun times, good memories!

  2. Hey, good for you! I bought that book at a used book-store. I loved reading it, remembering back to the "olden" times. Good sewing techniques are timeless.
