It's a Gardening Kind-a-Day

When the temps reach mid-70's, I think of getting my hands dirty.  In the dirt that is--the garden dirt.  I began cleaning out one of my vegetable garden beds and adding some soil amendments yesterday.

Onions are to be planted in this part of the country in January.  Today, they were planted.  Two sets of plants (a yellow variety and a red), each bundle containing about 60 little plants, are now in the ground to do their thing.  Can you see their little green tops?

I have two more beds to work on. I have some seed that I plan to start indoors for March planting.  For me, gardening is fun, a method of good exercise, a way to enjoy nature, tasty at harvest time, and a way to watch God's magic.  For me, it also serves as good therapy--working the dirt and provides a wealth of wonderful childhood memories.

My parents always had a vegetable garden.  I didn't eat a store-bought green bean until after I started to school.  My Mom always home canned green beans and her bounty generally last through the year until fresh ones were ready to be picked.  However, one year, she ran out before the new harvest.  She served up some canned green beans (carefully sneaking the can into the trash can before I saw).  I took one bite and questioned her, "What happened to these beans? They are  not fit to eat!"  Needless to say, home grown, home canned green beans are the BEST!

I did get to spend some time in the sewing room a couple of afternoons this week.  I have a Loes Hinse top pattern cut.  Hopefully, it will be a wearable muslin.  This will be first of her patterns that I have sewn.

I also played with the pattern pieces of Vogue 8805:

I plan to sew it up for Sis.  I will use Ponte (I think).  I just have decide the color combos from what I have in the stash.

Oh, and I made a pair of Peggy Sagers' Yoga pants in gray ponte.  When I get them hemmed, which is all that's left, I'll try to snap/post a photo.  As Scarlett would say, "Tomorrow is another day."

  1. Your crop of onions looks great. You made me laugh with your tale of canned beans. Same thing happened when my mother tried to pass of instant mash potato on us... YUK.

  3. It's almost unbelievable to see those temps, and gardens being planted, when I, in MI, am coping with snow and minus 0 temps! Oh, it did get up to like 7 today-heat wave!
