I got out the ripper

This morning I was cleaning and "cleaning out" to collect some things for an upcoming ASG neighborhood garage sale. The sister of a dear friend passed away last fall and my friend gave me some of her sister's clothes. I received some wonderful things that I dearly love.

In my closet I ran across a pair of Ann Taylor pants (97%cotton/3%lycra) in an off white. Waistband just below the waist (where I generally like it) and a curved waistband. While I really like the pants, I rarely wear white since I generally cannot get out of the house without some dog or cat hair connected to myself. And there's not much white hair on any of the pets!

I tossed them in the stack for the garage sale. Then I thought--those fit pretty well as I recall--so I decided to make a pattern from them. Out came the ripper and in about an hour, I was ready to trace a pattern onto paper.

I didn't finish the capris yet that I worked on this week and I wondered what the difference in the crotch curve might be. So, I pulled out the Ottobre pattern and laid it on top of the fabric pattern. I hope you can see the differences in these photos.

The front is almost the same; the back of the Ann Taylor has more of a scooped crotch and a straighter back seam. I think the Ann Taylor crotch is better for me. This difference may be the reason for some of the back seat wrinkles in the Ottobre pair. (I will still wear the capris even with the wrinkle.)

Interesting experiment. I want to pull out some stash cotton lycra and give this AT pattern a whirl. But, that won't likely happen until Sunday afternoon or Monday.

  1. Wow. I'm amazed that the front of the Ottobre is so similar. I've never taken RTW apart to make a pattern. It'll be interesting to see how this works for you.

  2. Interesting comparison. I did a similar one with Dana Buchman pants that fit great, compared to a Simplicity pants pattern that did not. I found the same thing, the pattern back crotch profile was higher, less scooped out than the RTW back crotch. The RTW scoop works better for bottoms that are lower and flatter....like mine.
