TAM #8

what? a skirt?  What has that got to do with TAM (top a month)?  Well, I used this skirt that I picked up at the Thrift Store I like to stop in occasionally when I'm in Dallas.  It was the lace hem that got my attention.  Fabric content said "Ramie" - not my favorite, but the lace..... Surely I could come up with a top out of it somehow.

As soon as I got home, into the washer/dryer it went.  Came out fine even tho the care instructions specified "Dry Clean Only."  Not is my house!  About the only thing that gets dry cleaned here is my wool winter coat.

Zipper was in the side seam.  Waist was faced and the lining was poly.  I ripped out the side seams and removed the zipper.  Pulled out my Louise Cutting Pure and Simple Shell pattern and carefully lay the front piece on the skirt.  The skirt has a center front and back seams.  I would have to shorten the top several inches, but I marked the length on the pattern and then held it up to me.  Yep, I thought it would work.

I had to cut the facings from white fabric I had on hand.  It was light and airy - felt a bit like batiste, but not.  The sewing went pretty fast; just sideseams, the facings on the neckline and armholes.  I did only one row of top stitching - actually edge stitching.  I tacked down the facing at the seamlines by hand to hold them in place.

Ta Da:

Yep, I think I like it.

Wow, this top actually catches me up to the month of August.  8th Month - 8th Top.  Not sure what might be next.

  3. That is just beautiful, and so pretty over the blue. Or, over a lacy cami. What a great re-fashion. Nice, nice work!

  4. You are really clever. I thrift shop all the time and have never thought too much about using anything other than the fabric. Now I'll have to look closely at the trims and everything else! I love the top and think it will work beautifully in Dallas.

  6. I love what you made from this thrift shop skirt. From ignoring the care instructions (something I do, too) to retaining the beautiful lace lower edge, and of course using a great pattern, this one is a winner. (I think that if I had seen that skirt and considered making a top from it, I think that the center seam would have stopped me. But look what you did! Lesson learned; thanks!
