Pure and Simple Shell

The first of Louise Cutting's Pure and simple shell is complete!

This is a loose weave fabric. I think it is mostly cotton, and it is VERY soft.

I think it will be cool and comfy for our hot Texas summer.

Louise does wonderful sewing instructions. The top went together perfectly and all the markings were 'right on' making the matching so easy.

For top stitching, I've gotten into the habit of using my machine's walking foot. I started this practice to alleviate some of the fabric shifting that tends to happen to me. Louise recommends using the Steam-A-Seam (to fuse the facing to the blouse) which helps tremendously, but I still like to rely on my walking foot.

You see in the above (and the one below) photo that to get close to the edge, I moved my needle as far right as the machine allowed.

The "top stitching" for the lower portion of the facing is sewn from the "inside" using the edge of the facing as the guide.

I can see more of these tops in my future. I have some silk charmeuse that I think will be nice!

I still need to work on the blue skirt that needed some alteration help (see a previous post). The elastic has been removed, the seams taken in. It's now waiting on the ironing board to sew in the more narrow elastic. I MUST do this before my interest wains!

I ordered this pattern after seeing it on your blog and then reading about it at Artisan's Square. I have come to really rely on shells summer and winter - shells are such wonderful wardrobe extenders. I like how you stitched the facings from the inside with the walking foot. I am always needing woven things for everyday wear in our hot summers-poly blends and most knits are too hot in Mississippi heat also. Those facings on wovens are annoying if something is being washed and worn a lot. I bind things a lot but some things just need a facing. I want to make some v neck shells and will need to use facings on those. Love your new socks and Cutting shell. mssewcrazy
