Thinkin' about Graduation

DGD will be graduating from the University of Maryville in St. Louis in May. I hadn't really planned to sew anything new, but as we are beginning to think about the trip, the urge to make something began to rise.

Shopping the stash, I came up with these two fabrics. The print is a wonderful 100% cotton. It is very soft, washes wonderfully, and hardly wrinkles. I purchased a bolt about 4 or 5 years ago paying $2/yd. I made a dress when I purchased it, but it has long gone to a new home. The blue is 50 poly/50 rayon. I think its a good color match.

The ceremony will be held during the day, outside, weather permitting.

I'm leaning toward this Burda pattern. You may remember I purchased this OOP pattern from E-bay last summer and made it up in the bright print on black rayon. It is so comfortable. I toyed with the idea of a little sheath, but I think this will be more "my style" of comfort. When sitting, I won't have to keep tugging at the hem to keep it close to my knee. Know what I mean?

The solid will be become some sort of loose jacket in the event I need something on my arms ward off a cool breeze or inside A/C. I also have a bolt of the blue that I purchased as the same place (C&C Fabrics, Dallas) for $1.50/yd. So, I can make a skirt and/or pants/capris to go with the jacket and have a bit of a "wardrobe capsule."

I need to look through the pattern stash and see what I come up with for the jacket.

  1. The weather in St. Louis in May can sometimes be unpredictable...so a jacket is a fantastic idea. I'll be working our university's graduation outside, too, and I hope we don't either die from heat stroke, get blown away, or get rained on...any are possible! If you have any time to hang around and do some exploring, let me know, I can recommend some cool places! Maryville is only about 10 miles from my house!
