Finally - some sewing

I've been wanting to make a jacket/coat with the blue sherpa that I had left from sewing the Christmas throw for DD and DSIL. I went through my pattern stash to look for potential jacket patterns. There were several possibilities, but I settled on this one. It's an OOP Butterick. I probably bought it at one of the 99cent sales. View D is spcifically for sherpa fabrics.

Not knowing how this would fit, but not wanting to make a muslin, I backed my ears and forged ahead with the size 14. I did increases the back width by 1" by offsetting the back fold by .5"

I made good progress. No, it's not finished, but it could be before the year ends if I get back to the sewing room this evening.

I apparently didn't pay attention to the "cut here for view D" and the sleeves are WAY too long. In the photo, I've cut the right one off, and I think it will be just about right now.

If I make this again, I will cut a new paper pattern with the seams allowance removed where it is called for by the pattern instructions. I didn't like "removing" the seam allowance directly from the fabric after it was cut once. To try to accurately remove the seam allowance around the collar and jacket front, I used my tape measure (5/8" wide) and chalk marker. I laid the tape measure at the cut edge of the fabric and walked it around the outside edge as I marked. It worked out pretty well for me.

When it is competed, I will write a review and give a few more details of the construction. I need to hit the button stash and find a pretty one.

In the meantime, I leave you with the spotted floor. There is blue fuzz all over everthing. My t-shirt and sweat pants I'm wearing are covered too.

Oh, and not to forget, have a safe, happy new year!

and p.s. yes, that's still the green print knit dress on Saphroni that hasn't been touched since I last wrote about it. Can you say, "lost interest?"

That is going to be a beautiful coat. I am not getting to sew presently but am going to pick up some fabric for a coat next year. I bought four rtw jackets this year and don't like wearing any of them. I think a custom fitted coat would be so much better. That is nice work on the coat you are doing. mssewcrazy
