I managed to finish up the top this afternoon. Here you can see that I mitered the corners. I made side slits (I can't remember if the original pattern called for slits, but I wanted them) and mitered them also.
I mentioned in a previous post that I cut the collar differently from the original pattern. If you are familiar with Louise Cutting patterns and the Nancy Zieman methods, collars are cut so that there is not a seam at the front collar pieces thus making less bulk at the corners. I like this method.
In this photo you can see the differences in the pattern. The pattern on the far right is the original pattern. The middle is the revised pattern with the front collar edge cut on the fold. The far left is the new pattern piece unfolded. I did make one goof. I should have only cut one with one seam that would be in the back on the undercollar. I didn't think it through completely and still cut two collars so both the top and the under collar had a seam at the back. But that worked out in this case since the fabric was striped. Not sure that it would have looked good with just one piece.
I didn't understand the instructions for sewing the collar and collar stand so I just did it "my way." I sewed the collar to the stand, then basted it to the neckline. I turned back the self facing and then clipped the top collar at the shoulder seam. I pressed the seam with undercollar sewn to the neckline into the collar and then turned under the collar stand and stitched. Presto, the collar worked whether I did it the Burda way or not.
I'm happy to have this finished. I think it will be a nice "hot" summer outfit for our Texas heat.
I'm still mulling over my next project. In the meantime, I get to add 2 more yards sewn to my tracking system. (This helps some since I had to add those 14 yards purchased last Thursday.)
Cute top - I have that exact same fabric!!

You did a great job with those stripes. I think I need a seersucker top too.
ReplyDeleteReally like this top. Great job on the mitered corners. I need to pull out my NZ book on this collar method. I have not tried it in a long time.
