Hot Patterns Top

What do you think?

This is the Butterfly Top. I was in Hancocks Monday. I had been toying with getting this pattern for some time. There was only this one left, and I couldn't remember if it had been discontinued/retired or not. So, I bought it.

Yesterday, I found some old poly knit and decided to test it. I measure between a 10 and 12. I read on PR that some felt it ran big. I vacilated between the sizes and then cut a 12 knowing I could always take bigger seams.

Here's the 12 with no alterations. It's cute, but I can't decide if I like it on me. If you are reading and have an opinion, please take a moment to comment. I'd appreciate the feedback.

If I do make it out of 'good fabric' I need to lengthen the back about an inch. It looks a bit wonky (which you can't see in this photo) because the back is shorter than the front. And I'll probably move the shoulder seam forward a seams width.

I also need to decide if the band is supposed to be a bit tighter so the "blousiness" (I'm sure that's not a word) blouses over the band a bit.

  1. It is a cute top, but my honest opinion is that it is too much fabric on you. You look like you're swimming in drapes and folds and cascades, and my eyes don't know where to stop and rest. And you have nothing figure-wise you need to cover up this much so flaunt what you've got, baby! ;-)

  2. Thanks Debbie, and I completely agree. I felt like I was adjusting drapes everytime I twisted or turned. I may eventually try it again with a size (0r 2 sizes) smaller and see what happens.

  3. Yea, I think it's too much on you. I made this same one - twice - and at first I thought I really like it, but after wearing it I realized I fussed with it constantly. And even when I went down a size for my second version it was too large.

The front *is* longer than the back, which isn't obvious until you sew it. Also, the band needs to be sewn smaller to get the blousy look shown in the illustration. I measured what I wanted to band to be and then sewed it that size instead of going by the pattern piece.
